MODALS

Can – Could – (be) able to

Functions:
To show ability
To suggest a possibility or to give an option
To ask for or to give permission
To show impossibility



May – Might

Functions:
To ask for or to give permission (formal)
To show possibility

Must – have/has/had to

Function:
To show necessity
To show lack of necessity

Will – Would – (be) going to

Function:
To indicate future time
To make a promise or to show willingness
To state a general truth
To ask a polite question

B. Differences

Berikut adalah beberapa perbedaan penting dalam penggunaan modal verbs :

Modal verbs atau kata kerja modal yang tidak memerlukan “s” pada kata ganti orang ketiga.
contoh: “He can speak Chinese” “Dia bisa berbahasa Cina”

“She should be here by 09:00” “Dia harus berada di sini sampai 09:00”

Gunakan “not” atau “tidak” untuk membuat kata kerja modal berbentuk negatif, bahkan dalam Simple Present Tense dan Simple Past Tense.
contoh: “He should not be late” “Dia tidak seharusnya terlambat”

“They might not come to the party” “Mereka tidak mungkin datang ke pesta”

Ada beberapa kata kerja modal yang tidak dapat digunakan pada waktu lampau atau past tense dan pada keterangan waktu akan dating atau future tense.
contoh: “He will can go with us” Not Correct “Dia akan bisa pergi dengan kami” Tidak benar

“She musted study very hard” Not Correct “Dia harus belajar sangat keras” Tidak benar

can – could – (be) able to

Could you please send us your catalogue?
You can buy anything with your money but you can not buy love.
Can you spin a top?

may – might

May you enjoy good health.
The instructor might have come to class late yesterday.

must – have/has/had to

We must  go to bed now.
Did Safina have to cook last night ?

will – would – (be) going to

He will go to Mount Kawi tomorrow.
The federal government will provide assistance to the hurricane victims.

shall – should – ought to

Shall we pay a call him?
You should see the doctor.
It ought to be done.
